I started the countdown two weeks prior. “Twelve days!” I sang out. “Seven days!” “Two days!” until finally it arrived: the first day of school. It was a momentous occasion this year: my youngest, Rowan, was starting kindergarten.
The week before a co-worker had sat in my office and told me about how she’d cried as she left her youngest in the classroom on his first day.
“I’m not going to cry,” I’d told her, shaking my head. “I’m looking forward to this too much. More free time, the quiet, coffee on the back patio by myself…it’s been so long.”
You can probably guess how that proclamation turned out. Famous last words, eh? Click over to read the rest of the story in my monthly Journal Star column…
